I am not normally a big fan of circular walks, and so far the only one I have drawn and walked here was a walk round the block from my house which is not worth sharing, but one thing Good Ways should be useful for is storing routes from local stations (and occasionally bus stops) to Slow Ways meeting points, and as part of my testing I made this collection covering a few places in Nottinghamshire and surrounding counties:

    1. Hi Hugh,

This is such a wonderful idea! Near where I’m based in Milton Keynes, we have a few Slow Ways, but the start points are all a long walk or a bus journey away. I can easily imagine being able to keep the existing Slow Ways routes the same, but provide more and more ways to get to the start. I find getting to the start of a route often the biggest blocker to walking or wheeling it. This would make accessing those routes a lot easier.

Thank you for the brilliant idea, and for sharing your routes!

Love this so much Hugh. What about a project/campaign for other Slow Wayers to help do the same?

I have created a collection of both circular and linear routes starting at Beeston bus/tram Interchange.

I found the video to be very helpful in creating routes and organising them into a collection. There were other routes, including Slow Ways, that fell within the area I drew around the Interchange, but for simplicity I just included my six routes.

My comments echo those made by Caroline B. Initially, after drawing a route, under “Publishing Information”, I opted to make the route private. Later, when organising the collection, I moved the switch right to opt for publication. I then updated the route. However, the route did not show and when I went back into edit mode, the switch had moved back again to indicate it was in private mode.
The only way I found to publish the route was to go into Profile, then select View. It was only by clicking on the share icon in the top right hand corner was I able to publish the route.

The Snap to Path option works well for the most part but can become complicated when there is a high density of paths- I sometimes found when editing a route it was a challenge to snap to the correct path.

Overall I have found this to be a good app to use, but clearly still work in progress.

I’ll have a look at those, as I know Beeston quite well

    2. Hi Malcolm! Thank you so much for leaving us feedback, and for your step by step on how to recreate the publishing bug. I’m pleased to say it’s now fxed and you can publish a route from the share icon and when editing a route!

I’ll play around more with ‘snap to path’ to make sure it’s easier to use in higher density paths.

I had a go at creating two collections. The video instruction was helpful. The function of selecting a zone is a good way to group the walks in an area. Shorter routes were easy enough to draw, the only issue was occasionally some stretches of footpaths were not recognised and it would try and ‘correct’ to a longer paved path. Longer routes were a bit more fiddly at times to finish. Final waymarkers would sometimes knock out the previous section of the route and were difficult to delete so it often took several attempts to get the route close enough. An undo button would be useful. When clicking the snap to path it would also help to have the green accept button appear in the same box and not off the screen to the side. Corrections to the route when it is test walked will help with the fine tuning of the route.

Some of my routes/collection I was unable to publish. Several attempts to select publish and update, then a green banner to say the update was successful, did not publish the routes.

When selecting a route from the collections map the route selected shows as a pop up, could it be set that the pop-up shows in full? Often the view button is off the bottom of the map and then cannot easily click on the route. An option to add a cover photo for the collections would be nice too, or it be taken from the first route added to the collection.

    1. Hi Caroline,

Thank you for testing out creating routes and adding them to collections. I’m glad that you seemed to find it generally ok to use!

On some stretches of footpaths not being recognised, it would be really useful if you’re able to share a pin or a location of these paths so I can take a look? It’ll be caused by us not properly processing some paths, but these things are hard to find sometimes!

We’ve added an undo button, and I’ll make it easier to find with the new designs. Sorry to hear you had issues with longer routes, I’ll look into it and see how we can improve. I love your idea of the ‘accept’ button on the path snapping appearing in the same box, we can certainly do that!

Huge thank you for finding the bug with publishing. I’ve now fixed that, so routes can be properly published.

I’ve added cover photos for collections to my list to do next week, and we’ll explore a route opening in full screen as part of the designs and your previous suggestion where the popups cover the route.

Thank you again for taking the time to give us such detailed feedback, and I’m hopeful we can improve the experience for everyone off the back of your ideas!

Hi, this all looks very exciting. I’m really looking forward to submitting some great walks based from Tiverton. I am away just now in the Pirrin mountains, Bulgaria. But back in a couple of weeks. I promise I’ll be on to it asap.
    Cheers
