Frequently Asked Questions

We’re so glad to have you as a member of Good Ways! Here are some common questions that come up about Good Ways and your membership.

How to get Good Ways app

How do I get the Good Ways apps?

The Good Ways app is currently only available to Founder Members and Community Supported Members.

You must use your Good Ways membership email address when you register for the apps or they will not work. You can check and edit your membership email here.

First log into the web app here. You can then access the iPhone and Android apps from here.

What is the difference between the apps?

We are still developing and testing the apps.

The web app (or website app) is mostly designed for creating, sharing and organising routes. The web app has some good functionality, but is yet to be fully visually designed.

The iPhone and Android apps are mostly designed for following routes and sharing notes, reviews, ratings, pictures and warnings. These early versions of the mobile app are available to testing, but still need a lot of feedback and work.

I’m having trouble logging into the apps, what should I do?

Please make sure you are using your Good Ways membership email. We are using your membership email to make sure you are eligible to access the apps. You can check and edit your membership email address here.

If you are still having difficulties you can contact us here. We will be very pleased to hear from you and to be able to help.

I’m not a Founder Member. Can I see the app?

Only Founder Members and Community Supported Members can see the test versions of the apps. You can join as a Founder Member and support our work from just £2.50 a month here.

Otherwise, please sign-up as a Starter Member and we will give you advance notice of when the apps will be available to the public.

About Good Ways

What is Good Ways?

Good Ways is a large-scale and long-term initiative to make it easier for everyone to enjoy the best active routes.

We’re making that happen by developing a project, app and campaign that will enable thousands of people and organisations to share great routes across the UK and Ireland.

Good Ways is the trading name of Good Ways Network, our nonprofit Community Interest Company. We used to be called Slow Ways CIC. Slow Ways is no longer our company name, but it is one of our flag projects that will eventually be hosted on the Good Ways platform.

How can I find out more about the plans for Good Ways?

Take a look at our plan.

What types of movement will be included?

Over time we will develop better and better features for the following types of movement, including variations of them.

✅ Walking
✅ Running
✅ Wheelchair
✅ Pushchair
✅ Horse-riding
✅ Cycling
✅ Swimming
✅ Skating
✅ Paddling (SUP, kayaking etc)

However you choose to move, we would love to hear your suggestions and ideas for making sure you have the information you need to find and enjoy an active route.

Where will be included?

The UK, Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.

What do you mean when you say you’ll share routes for peoples’ different interests and needs?

We have plans to make it easier for people to find routes that match their interests and needs.

Interests are things like nature, castles, pubs, beaches and swimming spots. Needs are requirements, such as toilets, benches or a route being cow-free.

We are designing Good Ways to be inclusive and for people with different disabilities. We will not be able to cover all needs straight away, but as the project develops we will make Good Ways more and more inclusive. This is a priority for us.

How will Good Ways be different from other apps and projects?

We love OS Maps, Strava, Komoot and the outdoor navigation gang. We use them ourselves – but nobody’s doing everything we’ve got planned.

🦉 Special-interest: Working for all abilities and interests
✅ Verified routes and networks – No randomness or chaos
🧩 Built for collaboration: Not individualism
🌍 Mission-led: For community, not profit
🤝 Community-powered: Made with and for the public
❤️ Home for charities: Enabling nonprofits to share routes
🧭 Focussed on the UK, Ireland and the Channel Islands
🎯 Shared aims: Know why and how people have designed routes
📂 Open data routes: Built to be shared, not locked down
🌐 A network of networks – A single place for great routes

We know we’re the underdog, but it’s wild this doesn’t already exist – so we’re building it for all of us.

I already have an app to help me get around. Why should I join Good Ways?

Here are 7 good reasons.

  1. By becoming a Founding Member you will get a say over the features and functionality we develop on the app.
  2. We want to make it as easy as possible for you to find the best active routes – wherever you are in the UK and Ireland.
  3. You’ll help create something positive that your friends, family, community and country can enjoy.
  4. You’ll be investing in a small, innovative and ambitious social enterprise working to make it easier for everyone to enjoy active journeys.
  5. Lots of the big and popular apps are brilliant if you are confident and don’t have any special interests or needs. We’re specifically designing Good Ways people with disabilities, kids, dogs and other specific needs.
  6. We plan to become the home of charities, schools, councils, community groups and other nonprofits that want to share good routes. Succeeding will make it easier for everyone to find routes they can trust.
  7. We promise to keep innovating in order to make it easier and easier to find, follow and share the best routes.
What is the difference between Good Ways and Slow Ways?

Good Ways is a much bigger and more ambitious project than Slow Ways. Slow Ways is going to continue, but as a flagship project within a broader drive to enable other people, groups and organisations to create their own routes and networks.

Memberships

How much is an Individual Founder Membership Membership?

£25 a year, or £2.50 a month.

That gets you a Good Ways membership that belongs to you, so you can take part in any groups and organisations you help without paying again.

Registering to find and follow routes stays free.

Join here!

How much will group membership be?

Groups will be £50 a year, or free to form if two of you already hold individual memberships.

We haven’t launched groups yet – tell us you’re interested and we’ll let you know when they’re ready.

How much is an organisation membership?

£100 a year, or free if four people in your organisation already hold individual memberships.

That covers charities, community interest companies, community groups and public sector organisations.

Join us here!

Your organisation can bring in as many people as you like to manage and collaborate on routes. Anyone who already holds a Good Ways membership counts straight away – they don’t pay again to help you.

During our testing period, we set up organisation accounts by hand. Get in touch and we’ll do it with you. It only takes a few minutes and helps us make sure everything works properly.

Multiple sites, heavy use or something unusual? Talk to us and we’ll work it out together.

How much will a business membership be?

Business membership is a minimum of £100 a year.

Above that, businesses contribute £1 per £1,000 of turnover, so larger businesses contribute more. There’s an upper limit so the largest businesses aren’t asked for an open-ended amount.

Every £25 includes a membership you can give to a member of staff, customer or your community. Alternatively, you can donate as a Community Supported Membership.

Wanting to involve lots of people with creating and curating your routes? Any number of Individual Members will be able to collaborate with you.

If you decide to end your membership all your published routes will remain live.

Want to get started now? Please contact us.

Are businesses allowed to advertise on the site?

No. No advertising and no spam – that’s not what Good Ways is for.

You can use Good Ways to help people get to your shop, sites, cafe or workplace. You can also use it to share great local routes for your community, customers, staff or audiences. That’s exactly what we’ve built it for.

Sharing good routes to your sites, your shop, your café or your workplace is a different thing entirely, and it’s very welcome.

What’s the difference between an organisation and a business membership?

Organisations are charities, community groups, schools, councils and other nonprofits. £100 a year, regardless of size.

Businesses contribute according to their turnover, starting at £100, and receive memberships to use for staff or give away.

Both get the same thing on Good Ways – your own profile, your branding and routes published under your name. Only the contribution differs.

A social enterprise or CIC can choose whichever fits how you work.

What is a Community Supported Membership?

Stretched? Can’t afford £2.50 a month right now but keen to be involved? Apply for a Community Supported Membership that’s been generously funded by another member. Simply join the waiting list here and we’ll let you know when one becomes available.

You can fund a Community Supported Membership for someone who can’t afford to join yet for just £25. Please donate here.

Can Community Supported Members form a free group or organisation?

Yes. Organisations are available now. Contact us here if you have a team of four Members and want to get started with an Organisation Membership.

Groups are in the pipeline.

What is a Good Ways Founding Member?

Founding Members are people who sign-up and support Good Ways in the early stages of the project.

It is a permanent status and recognises you as one of the people or organisations who made Good Ways possible.

As well as the kudos, Good Ways Founding Members get lots of powers, features and perks that free users don’t have access to. Find out more here.

Will Slow Ways users and members be able to use Good Ways?

Yes, but you will need to sign-up as a Founding Member to get the full range of member features, benefits and powers.

If you supported the Slow Ways crowdfunding campaign and claimed a membership reward, because of our name change, your membership is both with Good Ways and Slow Ways. Your subscription is with Good Ways, but you will have full member access for volunteering with Slow Ways when the project transfers onto our new Good Ways platform.

Can I join as both an individual and an organisation?

Yes! If you are an organisation’s administrator you can choose to take part on behalf of yourself or the organisation.

How will my membership subscription be used?

As a nonprofit Community Interest Company (CIC), all membership fees are reinvested into making the project a success. This includes funding the development of the app, our team, spreading the word, supporting our growing community and more.

How do I manage my account?

To manage your account, simply click on “Account” located in the top right corner of the website. You can view subscriptions, update your details or download payments receipts any time.
