Hand-drawn illustration of three colourful Good Ways routes winding through a diverse mix of people, an urban neighbourhood, countryside, river and coast. Walkers, wheelchair users, cyclists and paddlers represent different ways of travelling, while the three routes highlight choice and useful information, care for people and nature, and shared knowledge and trust, all leading towards a Good Ways sign.

Update 18: Help shape our culture. What do you think of these commitments?

Last month, we shared our three working principles for Good Ways, shaped by what people had told us about accessibility, caring for places and nature, sharing knowledge, privacy, openness and trust.

We said our next job was to go a little deeper: to work out what those principles mean in practice, what Good Ways should commit to doing, and what we should ask from people using it.

Here is our first attempt.

These are working commitments, not finished ones. They will help to shape our culture and will influence our terms and conditions.

We want to know whether they feel right, if the tone is OK, whether anything important is missing, and whether there is anything here that Good Ways should not promise – or ask of people using it.

In particular, we’d love to know:

  • Is there anything here you disagree with?
  • Is anything important missing?
  • Is Good Ways promising something here that it shouldn’t – or couldn’t realistically deliver?
  • Are we asking too much, or too little, from people using Good Ways?
  • If Good Ways had to make a difficult decision about a route, place, piece of information or commercial partner, would these commitments actually help us make it?

Please share your thoughts in the comments below. You can also email us at [email protected].

As with the principles themselves, we don’t expect to get this perfect first time. The point is to make these commitments useful – and to keep improving them over time as we learn together.

We are very much looking forward to reading your feedback.

Thanks very much!

A lot of this is pretty basic: we are all different, look after yourself, be kind to others and respect differences of opinion, be respectful of the places you travel through – I would expect this of any adult. Pretty difficult to disagree with, and I don’t mean this as a criticism.

I really like this: it adds an element of adventure to the whole process of finding and travelling routes, which is what I’m here for. Relying upon knowledge shared by others is also a good addition, and adds to the community purpose of this app.

I especially love keeping advertising and spam out of Good Ways, for reasons I shouldn’t have to explain. Please keep that in!

I personally don’t think any of this is asking too much of anyone using the app.

Thanks Tom. Is there anything missing you would add?

I like the way that your three principles gave you the infographic, which then led to your commitments and how they are set out. There is nothing I disagree with and I think the key to success will still be working with the community to refine these into a shorter punchier version.
