Screenshot of a Good Ways walking route card for Scout Scar Horseshoe in Kendal, Cumbria. The 7.7 km loop takes approximately 2 hours 29 minutes and has a 96% positive rating from 208 reviews, earning a “Really Really Good Way” badge. Reviewers describe it as nice, easy, safe and joyful, with views, dog-friendly paths, photo spots and benches. Buttons invite users to walk or review the route.

Update 27: When should we badge a route as a Really Really Good Way?

We want it to be really easy for people to see if a route is a Good Way to follow or not.

To help with that we have simplified and updated how we display route ratings, while also allowing to show lots of detail.

You can see the current version of the new system above. It will show:

  • a badge and status to quickly show if people think it is a Good Ways or not
  • the number and % of people who think a route is good, okay or not good
  • star ratings to show if people think a route is nice, easy, safe or joyful
  • tags to show what can be found on a route
  • written reviews

And we have plans to introduce reviewer filters, so you can just see ratings and reviews from the people or organisations you choose.

We are still exploring some key questions for this new system. When should a route be badged as a Good Way, Really Good Way or a Really Really Good Way?

When should a route earn a golden crown or other accolades?

And how should we recognise routes that aren’t so good?

We’ve put together a short, anonymous survey to gather feedback and help us answer this questions. We’d love to know what you think!

Please share your thoughts here!

And as ever, it would be great to read your comments below too.

Responses before Wednesday (28th of October 2026) would be most useful, but we’ll keep reading your feedback on this page beyond then.

Thanks very much for helping us shape Good Ways.

The RouteYou app (started in Belgium/Netherlands) is a similar project to Good Ways, which you may already be aware of. They have a four stage grading system for routes (Easy to Extreme) and explain their scoring system out of 100, for the grading of each route. They also have some very good map features and an extensive list of characteristics and themes used to categorise routes.
