A screen grab of the Good Ways prototype. The image is of the "browse" page. We can see options to choose other modes of travel. Most of the page is taken by a route card showing a route called Jesmond Dene Forest Walk There is a photo and short description.

This is looking better than I expected at this stage, but there is clearly still work to do. I created three routes, by importing gpx files created on Outdooractive. That worked fine. I then tried following one, recording it as an Activity. A few comments:

    1) The recording stopped at one point. I don’t know why. I didn’t press stop, but I was switching between apps, using the phone for different things during the walk. I spotted the problem, started re-recording, so the recorded track now has a straight line in it. It would need to be edited.
    2) I was able to use it for navigation, although, one serious limitation, at the moment, is that you cannot see what lies underneath the blue line (route) or purple line (activity). Am I on a footpath? Very important. On OS Maps and Outdooractive, you can see what is underneath.
    3) I cannot seem to access, edit or download the Activity. Is that something which will be added later?
    4) It uses a lot of battery power. I only looked at the screen for a few short periods but it used 23% of my battery over the 8 hours it was running (this was a 17-mile walk)
    5) It didn’t seem possible to pause the recording, so you have to leave it running during longer stops. This adds to the battery problem and can produce bizarre patterns on the gpx file when you stop, but the gps satellite thinks you are moving.

    1. Hi Steve,

Thank you for your comments! I’ve replied to them over on our forum: https://goodways.featurebase.app/p/feedback-on-walking-with-the-app

Like the previous Sue, I couldn’t access the questions. I was using the Google form and would appreciate some help, please.

I also found that the most difficult thing was to answer the questions! The survey opened numerous browser windows to enable me to try the tasks, and then finding my way back to the survey to continue with my answers became very confusing, to the point where I gave up. But the app prototype looks great! Perhaps in the review section where it asks for ratings in different areas (toddlers, wild swimming, etc.), there should be a “Don’t know / not applicable” option, not simply a star rating system.

I like that it’s simple and clean. It appears to have everything needed on a front page to get outside. Well done👍

Looks good and clean, mostly easy to follow. Navigating a new app always involves a little trial and error. Some things will only become clear when we’ve had a chance to use it properly but it looks enticing.

I like the look of it. The routes on the maps are obviously useless at the moment – just straight lines joining certain points – but I assume that’s because it’s just the prototype. Otherwise looking good!

I couldn’t even answer the questions to use the prototype. There was no moving down the page so I couldn’t answer and move on.
